Artificial Intelligence in the Workplace
As artificial intelligence continues to develop, many jobs currently performed by humans will be done by machines. Some people regard this as a positive development, while others worry it will cause widespread unemployment and social instability. To what extent do you agree or disagree that the increasing use of AI in the workplace will have more benefits than drawbacks? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
IELTS Task 2 Opinion essays ("To what extent do you agree or disagree?") are 250+ words in ~40 minutes. You must take a clear position and hold it consistently. Scored on Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammar.
1. Introduction
~40 words- Paraphrase the topic, then state your position clearly and unambiguously.
- Briefly preview the two reasons your body paragraphs will develop.
e.g. “While some argue that university should be free for all, I strongly believe that students should contribute to the cost of their education.”
2. Body Paragraph 1 (strongest reason)
~85 words- Open with a topic sentence stating your first reason.
- Explain the reasoning, then support it with a specific example or consequence.
→ “The most compelling reason for this view is that …”
3. Body Paragraph 2 (second reason)
~85 words- Topic sentence with a distinct second reason that supports the same position.
- Develop it fully — IELTS rewards depth over a list of thin points.
→ “A further argument in favour of this position is …”
4. Conclusion
~35 words- Restate your position in fresh wording and summarise your two reasons.
- Add no new ideas — the conclusion only consolidates.
e.g. “In conclusion, the evidence strongly suggests that …”
Common Pitfalls
- Sitting on the fence. An unclear or shifting position lowers Task Response — pick a side in the introduction and hold it.
- Two paragraphs that make the same point twice. Each body paragraph needs a genuinely distinct reason.
Writing Tips
- Develop two ideas deeply rather than listing four shallow ones — Task Response rewards extension and support.
- Answer every part of the question. "To what extent" expects a degree of agreement, not just yes/no.
