"Affects" is too vague. Specify what kind of pollution, what aspect of the environment, and what the specific mechanism is.
Wrong: After the company hired a new CEO, profits increased. The new CEO was responsible for the profit increase.
Right: Profits increased following the appointment of a new CEO. While the new CEO implemented several cost-reduction measures that likely contributed to the improvement, the profit increase also coincided with a broader industry recovery and the launch of a product that had been in development for three years before her arrival. Isolating her specific impact requires controlling for these other factors.
Always consider what else changed during the same period.
Wrong: The reason students fail is that they are lazy.
Right: Students underperform for a variety of reasons, including inadequate preparation in earlier grades, difficult home environments, learning disabilities that go undiagnosed, and, in some cases, insufficient motivation. Attributing failure to a single character trait ignores the systemic factors that research has consistently identified as more significant predictors of academic outcomes.
Causal claims in academic writing must be grounded in evidence, not personal judgments.
Wrong: Raising the minimum wage causes unemployment. Higher labor costs force businesses to cut jobs.
Right: Critics of minimum wage increases argue that higher labor costs force businesses to cut jobs. However, empirical evidence on this point is mixed. A landmark study by economists David Card and Alan Krueger found that a minimum wage increase in New Jersey did not reduce employment in the fast-food industry compared to neighboring Pennsylvania. More recent research suggests that moderate minimum wage increases may reduce turnover costs and boost productivity enough to offset higher wages. The causal relationship between minimum wages and employment is far more complex than a simple supply-and-demand model would predict.
Strong cause-and-effect writing anticipates and addresses counterarguments.
Wrong: Countries with more cell phones have higher GDP. Cell phones cause economic growth.
Right: There is a strong positive correlation between cell phone adoption and GDP across countries. However, this correlation does not prove that cell phones drive economic growth. Wealthier countries can afford more cell phones, and both variables may be influenced by underlying factors such as infrastructure quality, education levels, and governance. That said, targeted studies in developing countries have shown that mobile phone access enables farmers to check market prices and reduces information asymmetry, suggesting that mobile technology does contribute to economic activity in specific, measurable ways.
